Indoor Play Areas & Play Dates {Summer Bucket List}

Labor Day has come and gone, meaning it’s time to bid farewell to the lazy days of summer.  I’ve been back at work for nearly six weeks, and am starting a home school preschool routine for they days when I’m home.

Over the summer, we enjoyed an abundance of play dates and managed to soak in the cool air conditioning of indoor play areas in the process.   We met our friends at the library, local churches, restaurants, museums, and even their homes.

Playing at a friend’s house offers opportunities for the quads to practice respecting the rules of others, using manners, and taking turns with toys.

After spending time a local church’s playscape, my friend’s oldest daughter singlehandedly lined up five  three-year olds and led them to the parking lot.  This sweet big sister has a heart of gold and perhaps a future as a teacher.

The quads received a family membership to our local children’s museum as a birthday gift and we’ve made good use of it.  We have a well established routine for meeting buddies there and noshing on a picnic in the courtyard.

Play dates at the museum are terrific because there are ample things to do and explore and none of the toys belong to any of our kids.

I don’t know why it took me so long to find the joy in a McCafe while the quads romp around McPlayland.  McDonald’s will never top my list of favorite places to dine, but a warm cup of coffee while my children play in a climate controlled area close to home?  I don’t mind if I do!

We wrapped up our summer play dates with none other than the Bell Quads at our house.  I always marvel at lunch set up for eight.  It looks like a preschool class!

In lieu of naps, we had a screening of Tangled, which is a new quad favorite.  Sydney is hiding in the hallway to avoid seeing the “scary” part.

No play date is complete without bidding our friends farewell with a bear hug.

When I plunked down a summer bucket list, I didn’t consider the level of commitment involved.  It didn’t take us long to tackle the majority of the items listed, but keeping up with photo editing and blog publishing took me all summer long.  I’m glad I published the list though.  If I hadn’t, I may have skimped on our summer.  If you’re paying close attention, you probably noticed that “train ride” is yet to be accomplished.  Nisey and Poppa gave the kids a gift certificate to ride the train for the kid’s birthday.  We are waiting for fall weather to enjoy the trek so stay tuned for that quadventure!

Class Party

The last time we enjoyed a play date with the Bell Quads, I mentioned feeling a bit sad that my kids don’t have the opportunity for class holiday parties. I don’t know why, that just seems to be something fun for little kids to do. Noting the fact that between us we have a full capacity Mother’s Day Out class, Amber suggested we have a little class party of our own for Saint Patrick’s Day.  Brilliant!

Originally, Amber intended to hostess this shindig.  However, her crew became extremely ill last month and was under quarantine orders for four weeks!  I started feeling a bit loony after our week-long escapade with a stomach bug so I can only imagine what she experienced.   I invited the Bells to our house in hopes of providing fresh scenery.

Keeping up with the party theme, I dressed everyone in assorted Saint Patrick’s Day attire.  Oddly enough, several of them came from hand me down bins.   Amber and her crew also dressed the part in shades of green.

Amber brought themed plates and party decor while I served a green meal.  For the main course, I wanted to serve a new family favorite (it is a super easy recipe that also happens to be green in color #WINNER).  The recipe originally came from Picky Palate, but my family wasn’t fond of it as is.    After making several tweaks to the recipe, I came up with one my family demolishes.  Seriously, my kids eat 3-4 servings each when I make this meal so I knew Amber’s kids would approve as well.  To make the green menu complete, I served steamed broccoli, a tossed green salad, and key lime yogurt bites.

While I was tossing ingredients together for our class party, I prepped two more batches for freezer meals.  We have several friends with new babies, and I know freezer meals are among the most appreciated gifts for new moms.  In case you want to give this recipe a spin…

While I plated dinner, Amber introduced paint with water books she scored at Target’s One Spot.  It was shockingly quiet as these little artists went to work.  It really resembled a little preschool class.

When dinner was ready, both Amber and I marveled at how big our kids have gotten.  I couldn’t help but reminisce about our first play date that involved doling out several rounds of bottles, assembling four pack ‘n’ plays, and alternating kids through the quad table.  It was A LOT of work in those days.  Now the eight of them can gather around a dinner and feed themselves using utensils.

Amber’s party plates were really cute, but I really loved them when it was time to clean up after dinner.  I simply tossed eight plates into the garbage instead of washing them.  After dinner, the kids spent time in the playroom before we changed all eight into pajamas.  And, just like “school” all eight gathered on the playroom rug for story time.  It was absolutely precious watching all eight sprawled out or crouched around to listen.

When the bedtime hour approached, the quads bid their buddies farewell with hugs (ADORABLE!).  George and I tucked our four in, and then I helped Amber load her crew into the Suburban.  I’d say it was a “class party” quad play date success!

Play Date for Eight

We finally settled into our new digs enough to host our first play date with none other than our quad buddies, the Bells. After several trial and error play dates, Amber and I discovered that evening play dates are pure genius. Initially we tried the traditional daytime rendezvous and failed repeatedly. The babies usually played happily until nap time.  However at nap time, the visitors protested voraciously and the host babies were upset by wailing visitors. This left two frazzled mammas with eight grouchy babies.  It wasn’t pretty.

We now meet up after all babies are refreshed from naps and have several hours before bedtime. The hostess serves up dinner for everyone and the mammas enjoy a glass of vino while the kiddies play in harmony. I can honestly say this is the only way to have a relaxing play date with so many little ones.

Despite a week of flash flooding, we opted for an evening of water play.  What better way to celebrate summer?  In preparation for the event, I littered our backyard with water tables, a mini pool, slide and an assortment of water toys.  While my quads snoozed, I prepared a picnic for everyone: P B & J triangles with berries and veggie sticks for the quads, pimento cheese for the adults, and cakeys for dessert (cake bars Rylin dubbed “cakeys”).

During the day, I showed the quads pictures of the Bell family and explained they were coming over.  After nap, I dressed everyone in swimsuits and doused them in sunscreen as I reminded them of our company.  Clearly they knew it was time to parr-tayy because all four began running circles in the den as they squealed in delight.  When Amber and her crew arrived, I gave her the quick house tour then we ushered all eight babies outside.  Thankfully, George was home from work a bit early so he helped set up the goods for water play (he was also instrumental in clean up efforts).  Everything went swimmingly!  All eight babies scampered around, finding ways to entertain themselves.

It didn't take long before all eight babies were fully entertained with water play.

It looks like someone found the mud.  No worries though, Amber and I had a solid clean up plan.

All eight of the quads now interact with each other, and don’t always stick to their familiar siblings, which indicates play date success in my book.

Look carefully in the background and you’ll see Harper bailing water from the mini pool to the galvanized bucket. He managed to fill it halfway with just that little red scoop!

As the dinner hour approached, I gathered our picnic trappings and brought them outside along with plastic dinnerware.  Within seconds, all eight babies gathered around our Little Tykes picnic table where we dished out dinner.   Our quads don’t have the best track record for eating meals away from their quad table so I wasn’t really sure what eight would do.  They amazed us as they sat for the entire meal and gobbled up dinner.  I suppose they worked up hearty appetites playing outside.

I couldn't squeeze eight plates around the picnic table, but sharing is commonplace for multiples so it wasn't a problem.

When the sun began to set, George, Amber, and I created a pioneer style wash basin for the babies with our toy bucket.  George filled it with warm water then Amber and I took turns sponge bathing our respective babies and wrapping them in dry towels.  As each one was wrapped tightly, we lined them up in the den for a Veggie Tales movie.  Amber and I managed to “bathe”, dry, and dress eight babies in pajamas (complete with lotion) in a matter of minutes.  Impressive, I think.  I turned on our classical lullaby playlist as everyone enjoyed perusing a few books and novel toys before bed.  George tucked our babies into cribs as Amber and I loaded hers into the Suburban before we said farewell.  Another successful play date for eight!

Quads x 2!

When I learned that the Bell Quad Squad planned to relocate to the Dallas area I was ecstatic.  I envisioned epic quad play dates plus some adult time with parents in the trenches.  A few months ago, the Bells finally made the big move up here.  However, I presumed they were overwhelmed with moving quadruplets across state, searching for a new home, and fielding visitors.  The last thing I wanted to do was pounce on an already over extended  family.  Last week, I knew it was time for the epic quad play date.  The tell-tell sign was Amber’s Facebook post of herself sitting in the apartment lawn encircled by to Exersaucers, a Jumparoo, and a quilt littered with baby toys.   I know that we can feel cabin fever from being cramped in our house.   I can’t imagine contending with 11 month old mobile quadruplets in a two bedroom apartment, even just temporarily.  I messaged Amber to see if she was up for the adventure and she happily accepted the challenge.

As it turns out, planning a quad play date is quite an undertaking.  Amber and I messaged back and forth for a solid three days before the big event.  Topics of consideration included schedules, getting lunch for ourselves, and what Amber should pack (or not).   After a lot of banter, we hatched a fool-proof plan.  At first we were frustrated by seemingly opposite feed and nap schedules.  However it worked out rather well in the end.  Prior to their arrival, I set up our four pack ‘n’ plays in our study and master bedroom while Amber loaded her Suburban across town.  While she was en route, Amber stopped by Chick Fil A to snag some lunch for the Mamas (Hooray for that!).

Amber arrived with babies in tow just as my crew began waking from their morning nap.  As I settled my babies in the feeding table, Amber let her four acclimate to their new surroundings.  They seemed to enjoy their new surroundings and became comfortable quickly, with the exception of Logan.  Poor Logan was having an “off” day and was less than pleased with the whole ruckus of eight babies.   I’ll admit, I expected there to be one or more unhappy babies and figured one or more would likely be mine.  I was relieved that there was only one unhappy camper in the bunch and she didn’t belong to me (sorry Amber B!)  Not bad to have only one baby fuss given the circumstances.  There was one Shawver family member that was far more upset than Logan though.  Lily protested being quarantined on the opposite side of the fence.  I haven’t a clue why a Yorkie would want to roam about with EIGHT babies crawling at her and grabbing her.  Most of the day, babies took turns peering through the bars of the gate at Lily as she whined about her situation.

Mason leaned how to pull up to stand in order to get a better view of Lily.

Logan just wanted a little extra TLC from Mama.

After my babies gobbled up their lunch, I practically hosed the table down and we traded out babies.  It wasn’t long before Amber had all four of her babies fed that we had all eight babies in the den for official play time.   For the first time, I thought our den resembled a day care class, but I loved it.  The babies spent time exploring on their own and also noticing unfamiliar faces and toys.  Amber brought some of their favorite toys along for familiarity, but they fascinated my babies with novelty.  Her toys made me once again realize I underestimate my babies’ abilities.  Rylin surprised me when she rolled a bus on the hard wood and they all enjoyed the rocking horse.  It looks like George and I will be searching for some riding toys and the buses housed in storage will soon appear.

Since the babies were on slightly different schedules, we were able to share our quad feeding table.

Despite all of the babies (especially Rylin)  having “stranger danger”, they all seemed to know that the other Amber was okay.  Rylin and Sydney crawled right up to Amber and engaged her as if they were old friends and Harrison buddied up to me like we’ve known each other for years.

To both Mama’s delight, we managed to get ALL eight babies to nap simultaneously!  It started with protests from many, but even Amber’s babies in the new place settled.  Amber and I enjoyed the bit of peace as we ate our own lunches and enjoyed grown up conversation together.

As babies woke from slumber, Amber and I snatched them up one at a time to keep them from disturbing others.  Once all eight were up it was play time again.  I’m not sure how much time passed, but at some point good moods faded and Amber inquired, “Do you have a Baby Einstein?”  I’m not sure if you’ve ever witnessed a baby watching one of those DVDs, but they are magical.  As soon as the music filled the den, eight little heads turned towards the television and sixteen eyes fixed on the screen.  We took the opportunity to line all eight babies up to snap a picture.   Of course still and quiet babies was short lived.  It did not take long for Mason and Kailey to escape for greener pastures, but it was nice while it lasted and it helped the fussing cease.  About the time Logan felt at ease and relaxed, it was time for the Bell babies afternoon bottle and dash to beat rush hour traffic.  Quad mamas are forced to be efficient, but there is one thing more efficient than a quad mama: TWO quad mamas!  In a flurry, we had the den tidy, babies fed and changed, four babies in cribs and four more loaded into a Suburban in record time.  It was a successful quad play date for all!  We’re looking forward to a repeat of the action and maybe even a play date with Quadfathers included.

Some how all eight babies gravitated to this toy at once! Amber and I took turns helping everyone stay balanced so the other could snap pictures.

While the day was a success, I was tuckered out by the end of it.  By the time our babies were tucked into bed for the night, I decided it was time to wind down with a crisp glass of pinot grigio and a warm chocolate chip cookie.  Well deserved, I think.

Quatriplets

Back in our NICU days, a set of triplets was born just five days after the quads.  For some reason,  triplet suite is on another floor from the quad suite so we never saw them.   However, one night the babies’ nurse impassibly mentioned that she knew the family with triplets and went to church with them.  I really wanted to meet the parents as a way to normalize the whole multiples in the NICU experience, ect.  Of course due to HIPPA, the nurse could share no information about the triplets or their parents.  I cajoled this poor nurse a bit trying to get her to tell the triplets mom to Google and maybe search for our blog and leave a comment.  She agreed to none of that.  Finally someone suggested we both go to the parent lounge at the same time one particular day.  I awkwardly brought my lunch to the lounge at the specified time and waited for someone to enter who might possibly be the triplets’ mom.  I think the triplets’ mom, Tiffany, did the same thing.  At some point we finally introduced ourselves.  The two of us sat together commiserating and story swapping until it was time for “the feed”.  We exchanged phone numbers and have kept in contact since, texting often.  I think we’ve got the quads and triplets practically on the same schedule.

With lock down a thing of the past, Tiffany brought the triplets (Landry, Haylie, and Luke)  over for our very first play date.  We affectionately called it “The Quatriplet Playdate”.  I borrowed that term from a few passersby who apparently lack multiples terminology and call the quads, “Quatriplets”.   Both Tiffany and I anxiously awaited the moment when all of the babies would get an opportunity to see and interact with non-sibling babies.  All of them are around other babies 24/7, but rarely see another baby. To our surprise, the babies didn’t seem particularly interested in one another.  For the most part, the triplets congregated near each other and the quads did their normal stuff too.  Mason is the only one who crawls so he sort of made rounds, visiting everyone and then went off on his own.   On the upside, everyone was completely content and no one fussed.  In my book that is a successful play date!  It will get more interesting when everyone is truly mobile.

I thought the "Quad Squad" onsies were appropriate for our Quatriplet play date. You know, just in case you can't figure out who is a quad and who is a triplet.

I am aware that Mason and Sydney’s are still swallowing them.  But, Harper won’t be able to wear his much longer and it’s sort of a set so I’m trying to get some wear out of them while we can.

Here's what it looks like when you put seven babies together for blanket time. I guess this is what septuplets look like!

As we’ve kept contact, I’ve always thought there was a “match” between each of the triplets to one of the quads.  Of course, Haylie sort of goes with both of our girls well, because she’s a girl.   Like our girls, she’s also seemingly strong-willed and sassy to boot.  Like Mason, Luke sounds like the easy-going guy who giggles often and “goes with the flow”.  Just like Harper, Landry is the big brother who enjoys being the casual observer most of the time.   For fun, I made sure everyone met their match and snapped pictures of them together.
