Bounce House & Grill Dinner Outside {Summer Bucket List}

For their first birthday, the quads received a mini inflatable bounce house from a family friend.  Although there tends to be a short season when we can use it, this toy earns it’s keep at our house.  It’s very popular with the neighborhood kids and about 30 minutes of bouncing almost always guarantees a good nap (my favorite part!).

Thanks to torrential floods early in the summer, we only enjoyed the bounce house a few times.  One temperate day we decided to grill burgers while the kids bounced.  Almost as soon as dinner was finished, we began to feel tiny droplets of rain.  George and I sprung into action, deflating the bounce house and folding it to keep it dry.

Party Animals {Safari Party}

Birthday parties are one of the few times it’s more cost-effective to have four children at the same time. Instead of hosting four parties throughout the year, we throw one big bash for four kids.  For the big one, we hosted a splash party at our home, and when they turned two we had a pirates and princesses soirée at the house.  I enjoy decking the house for parties,  but it’s hot outside in July and guests end up cramped in the den.  This year I decided the party would be away from home with limited prep and clean up.  We rented a local church’s jungle themed playscape.  I ran with the existing decor for a safari party.  My friend, Amber, designed custom invitations, which I printed myself.  She is expanding her Etsy shop, Texas Take, to include invitations and other printables.  For your next shindig, check out her collection.  If you don’t see something that fits your theme, she can create something unique for you.

I was disappointed at the lack of safari party supplies and favors at our local party and big box stores, but Amazon did not disappoint.  I scored paper bags at Hobby Lobby in the kid’s colors and filled them with Amazon trinkets including: neon animal print pencils, animal print notebooks, make-a-zoo animal sticker sheets, and flashlight key chains, all of which coincidentally came in the same four colors as the bags.  I also ordered each party guest a beige pith helmet to add to our party ambiance.  Keeping with our prior party tradition, my friend Jen, snapped photos of the party.  It means so much to me that she takes pictures because if it were up to me, we’d get home without a single picture.  I struggle to host parties and preserve memories of them at the same time.

Since our party wasn’t at home, our menu consisted of easy to prep and serve kid-friendly fare: fresh fruit, veggie straws, animal crackers, popcorn, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and juice boxes.  I intended on ordering a Costco sheet cake too, but George insisted on baking and decorating blue and pink velvet cupcakes himself.  He did a fantastic job!

As part of our party decor, I printed our three-year photos Jen shot the week prior and mounted them onto canvas using a tutorial from Designer Trapped in a Lawyer’s Body. My little project set me back about $20 and maybe 30 minutes of time.  I believe I’ll be making many more canvas photos in the future.

As party guests arrived, we snapped a quick family photo.  As usual, we weren’t successful in capturing four smiling kids, but we got this one.

Our venue was ideal for our mix of party guests.  The quad’s little guests included another set of quads, a set of triplets, two sets of twins, and five singletons.  If you do the math, that’s lots of little people!  We also had their teenage cousins, parents, and grandparents at the party.  The littlest ones were content hanging out on the playscape while the older kids (and adults) were entertained by the arcade.

Water Table & Sidewalk Chalk {Summer Bucket List}

Between Texas heat and potty training quadruplets, my sanity is questionable most days.  One lifesaver has been water play.   Our Little Tikes water table and iconic pink NICU bathtubs have been well used this summer.  I try to introduce novel items with water play to keep it engaging.  If I’m dressing four kids in swimsuits and setting up water, it has to last at least an hour, preferably longer.

1. Little People Bath Station

I was inspired by My Nearest and Dearest to set up a Little People water park and bath station on the front porch.  I gave each of the kids a tub filled with water, a mini bottle of baby wash, a wash cloth, and a few Little People dolls.  They spent the entire morning scrubbing dolls and squirting soap.  Lots of clean fun!

IMG_2226

little people bath station

2. Dish Washing Station

I borrowed this idea from a neighbor because it was brilliant.  I gave each child tub of water, a stack of play dishes, a scrub brush (I found super cute ones with animal handles at the Dollar Tree), and a Softsoap bottle filled with a little bubble bath and water. They got busy washing their dishes, and then scrubbing the patio before they jumped into the tubs themselves.  It’s hard to imagine they used to take a bath in these tubs and can barely fit inside now.

As the quads splashed around, my tootsies enjoyed a Mary Kay foot soak followed by energizing mint lotion.  I was in a foul mood that day thanks to countless potty accidents paired with many tantrums.  My little Mom foot spa worked amazingly at changing my demeanor.  I felt rejuvenated and the kids behavior seemed drastically better when I felt better.

Then….

3.  Condiment Bottle Squirters

Another day, I set up shop on the front porch.  I situated myself on an angle so I could supervise water play on the porch and sidewalk chalk drawings on the driveway. For water play, I used the NICU tubs and Softsoap bottles with bubbles, but also gave each of the quads an assortment of empty condiment bottles filled with colored water to mix.  I enjoyed another foot soak, this time whilst sipping fresh lemonade.   From time to time, the kids would give me a little foot treatment by pouring bubbles over my calves, which was sweet.  When we were finished playing we dumped the water tubs over the sidewalk chalk art to clean the driveway.

I love knocking out two bucket list items all at once!  Stay tuned as we wrap up the bucket list.

Hello, three year olds!

Three days ago, our “babies” turned THREE!!!!  Last week my friend, Jen, came over and snapped a few three-year photos of the crew to mark this milestone.  On their birthday I asked them a few interview questions about their favorite things.  I plan to ask the same questions every year, perhaps adding a question each year.  One thing I’m loving about this age is the conversations we have, especially when I get insight into their perception of the world.

Family Flicks {Summer Bucket List}

Back in February, we took the crew to their first movie in a theater. We have a discount theater nearby and tickets are a whopping $1.15 each, and kids under three are free. Seriously, it cost us $2.30 for six of us to see a movie in a theater.  Unsure of how they’d behave, we sat on the back row in case we needed to make a quick escape.  Being movie aficionados, all four watched the entire movie intently.  Ever since, I wanted to take them to another, but waited for the right film to drop, and for a day when Nisey & Terri could join us.  A few weeks ago, Home was on the schedule and it looked perfect.

summer movie

Since tickets were inexpensive, we splurged on popcorn and soda from the concession stand.  Even paying full price for snacks, I think we spent less on tickets plus snacks than we would have at a traditional theater. We all enjoyed the movie and the kids behaved just as well as they did for their first theater flick.

Following the movie, the quads had a blast darting up and down the long theater hallways.  Fortunately, no one else was in the vicinity so they didn’t bother anyone.

summer movie

Long before we had kids, George and I received an hot dog roller for our media room.  Not expecting much out of it, we threw a few hot dogs on it and they cooked perfectly, just like at a concession stand.  We later found matching hot dog and popcorn holders, and hoped they would eventually be perfect for family movie night.   We were right. One evening when the dinner hour approached, we spread a quilt over the living room floor and set up TV trays.  We dusted off our trusty hot dog roller and accessories and prepped a concession stand dinner with hot dogs, pickles, tater tots, and popcorn.  Since we don’t typically eat in the living room, the quads were thrilled.

Bahama Buck’s- Original Shaved Ice {Summer Bucket List}

The quads sampled their first snow cones at our annual NICU reunion this spring, but hadn’t gone to a legitimate snow cone place (you know the kind with shaved ice and a gazillion flavor options?!?!).   After hearing locals buzzing about Bahama Buck’s and George and I were dying to give them a whirl.   Bahama Buck’s is a bit more refined than the old snow cone shacks I remember enjoying as a kid, but they boast just as many decadent flavor options.  George and I both ordered our old school favorites: Ninja Turtle (not technically on the menu, but they created one for George with banana, blue coconut and lime) and Tiger’s Blood.  In good quadruplet fashion, the kids chose their assigned colors rather than favorite flavors: Rylin- Pink Princess, Harper- Blue Coconut, Sydney- Purple Grape, and Mason- Green Lime.  Even though we ordered the “baby” size, these snow cones were mammoth, and thankfully the quads did not even try to finish them.  If they consumed all of the sugar they never would have gone to bed that night!

No Skid Toddler Slippers

We have A LOT of tile in our house, which tends to be cold underfoot, and I hate having cold feet.  I wear slippers a lot of the time, especially during the winter. Apparently the kids took note and developed and minor obsession with slippers. In fact, they wear slippers in the house almost daily. The girls were ecstatic when they received princess slippers from our quad buddies, The Bells. However, these adorable slippers were a bit eh, slippery on our tile. The girls practically ice skated all over the place and hit the ground a bit too much for comfort.  I’m admittedly over anxious about head injuries since I had a concussion at age six from slipping in a pair of socks on the hardwood floors.

After the quads were tucked into bed, I rummaged through our craft cabinet and found some Tulip dimensional fabric paint.  In about five minutes time, I dotted the paint over the preexisting dots on each slipper.  I then let them dry overnight.  By morning the girls donned no skid slippers!   It was such a simple fix.  It also works on socks, footed pajamas, or any other soft soled shoe.

Hopping Down the Bunny Trail

Last weekend felt like a whirlwind.  We started off by participating in our friend’s wedding, then we had our usual weekend errands followed by a birthday party, and Easter Sunday rounded it off.  In the midst of loading and unloading, one of the kids apparently switched an interior light on in the van.  Unbeknownst to us, it stayed on all night long.  After dressing everyone in Easter attire for dinner at Nisey and Poppa’s house our van battery flat lined.  Since the van is our sole family vehicle, either we’d go in the van or be marooned at home.  Naturally, the van was parked safely in the garage rendering the battery inaccessible for a jump.  Loading four toddlers into car seats isn’t an easy task so we had no intention of unloading until we arrived at our destination.  With all four kids loaded in the van, George pushed it down the driveway onto our street for a jump.  Though it was a bit of an ordeal, it did the trick and we were on our way.  The kids were good sports about it and sang the alphabet repeatedly while waiting.

Toddler Beds, Take Two

big boy beds

At the start of the year, Sydney forced us to transition the girls from cribs to toddler beds.  Being a daredevil, Sydney escaped from her crib, which meant keeping the girls in cribs was no longer safe.  Since the boys are rather mischievous and had not attempted such an escape we kept their cribs intact. I was absolutely content with this arrangement.

Since moving the girls to toddler beds, they’ve done well, but naps are sporadic at best.   They tend to gab to each other as if it’s a constant slumber party.  Recently, Mason began trying to go to bed in the girls rooms and occasionally asked for a big boy bed.  He really tugged at George’s heartstrings on this one.  After some thought, George and I decided spring break week would be best for this change.  It meant I’d be home all week as we eased into toddler beds.

The day prior to the big change, George inspected the boy’s room for final toddler proofing measures.  All furniture was secured to the wall, latches were installed to the closet door and cabinets, electrical cords were secured, outlets covered, blind cords clipped, and the chair removed.  George then removed the front panel on both cribs.   We introduced the OK To Wake! Owl, and explained that the boys were to stay in bed until the owl illuminated green in the morning.

George read bedtime stories to the crew before tucking the boys into their new beds.

George read bedtime stories to the crew before tucking the boys into their new beds.

Following story time, both boys scrambled into their respective beds as if they’d done it a million times.  It was so easy.  Too easy.

toddler beds

Once prayers were said, I flipped off the lights and both boys snuggled under the covers.  About 30 seconds after we left the boy’s room, they both came charging into the playroom.  I’d forgotten to secure the door knob cover.  Once I wrapped it in a few layers of packing tape, they were set for the night.  George and I retreated to the den for some television watching and braced ourselves for protest.  I checked the baby monitor multiple times, and instead of finding distraught boys, I found two sweetly sleeping boys.   Much to my surprise, we didn’t hear a peep out of them until 7:30 am when Mason proclaimed, “It’s okay to wake!  The owl is green!!!”    I was even more surprised when I found their room totally undisturbed.  Though the room was toddler proofed and immediate hazards were removed, I anticipated a few trouble spots.  Fully expecting these things, I begged George to install latches on EVERY drawer.  His reply, “Let’s see what happens.  Give them the benefit of the doubt.”  While I want them to learn independence, sometimes my sanity is worth taking extra precautions.  I had a little side of crow for breakfast the first morning after toddler beds.

The first day they went down for nap without too much trouble, except they never actually fell asleep.  Instead they had great fun swapping beds and playing all sorts of imaginative games.  At the end of nap quiet playtime, everything in their rooms was in order.

When I went to get the boys up the second morning, I was greeted with a light citrus fragrance trailing from their room.  Undeniably familiar…GermX hand sanitizer.  Inside, I found Harper squirting the last few drops of a once full bottle of GermX all over the dresser.  It was one germ-free dresser that’s for sure.  Aside from the sanitizer, things looked good.

When I opened the bedroom door, I found Harper squirting the last few drops of a once full bottle of GermX all over the dresser.

On the third morning, I discovered socks in the diaper champ and diapers/ swim suits strewn about the room.  I was fed up with these shenanigans especially considering at least one was preventable with a strong latch.  I shot off an angry text complete with pictures for George to see.  His reply, “Mismanagement???”  Oh no, mister!  I was NOT pleased with this response.  I wanted some serious latches.

toddler bed mischief

The boys were different size diapers, which meant I had to sort through each one.

toddler bed mischief

On day four, the morning went smoothly even though George hadn’t yet installed any new latches.  I crossed my fingers for nap, but it did not go well.   About an hour into nap, I heard something suspicious.  Harper managed to dismantle the diaper champ and shredded the garbage bag inside.  Thankfully I emptied it just prior to nap so there were no diapers inside.  I suspected they may put things in the Diaper Champ, but never thought they could take it apart.  I ended up locking the Diaper Champ in the closet, scolded the boys, and put them back to bed.

diaper champ dismantle

The rest of nap did not go any better, the boys finagled a cabinet door open where George had installed a latch.  Once inside the cabinet, they had a hay day scattering undies, socks, and pajamas everywhere.  Harper informed me he was making a train.  To his credit, he lined the baskets up and it did resemble a train.   The only good thing about this mess is that it forced me to do a little spring cleaning.

toddler bed mischief

Despite the now daily shenanigans, George didn’t see a need for additional latches just yet.  On the fifth morning of toddler beds, I woke up to find all of the dresser drawers pulled out with pants scattered about the room.  The drawers aren’t terribly big, but for toddlers are slightly heavy so George finally agreed to latch them.  AMEN!!!!

toddler bed mischief

During nap on day five, Poppa stayed home with the boys so I could run errands.  According to Poppa, the boys sounded rather rowdy.  When he checked on them, both mattresses were off the beds and the boys were jumping wildly.  After a stern talk from Poppa, both boys fell asleep.  (I think I need a recording of Poppa telling the boys to go to bed.)

Today was the first morning when things were not in shambles.  Instead of trouble, I found Mason holding the owl so it would cast light on the door as Harper created shadow puppets.  That charade warmed my heart. The morning was smooth, nap not so much.  This time time they removed the sheets from their beds and got into the diapers again.

toddler bed mischief

Desperate for the boys to take a nap, I settled them onto pallets and rubbed their backs to settle them.  It worked like a charm!

sleeping on pallets

After a full week of toddler bed mayhem, I harassed George enough for him to install latches on the remaining accessible drawers.  Of course, these guys are a clever pair so I’m sure they’ll discover more mischief.  At least I can rest knowing we really exhausted all toddler proofing options available, and George can rest knowing I won’t pester him anymore.

toddler proofing

Even though the boys have created far more messes than the girls could ever imagine, I have to give them kudos for going to bed easily and staying asleep through the night.  The girls keep their room tidier, but getting them to bed is a bit more problematic.

Ornaments Up, Ornaments Down

This year marked our first time hosting Christmas with my extended family. With four two-year olds in the house, we knew decorating for Christmas would pose a slight challenge, but we were up for it. Last year, we put our tree up on a sturdy table, and for the most part ornaments were out of reach.  It worked beautifully.  This year, everyone grew enough that they could reach ornaments even if the tree was raised, and I feared they would tip it over. I refused to put the tree in a room where it would be unseen or to put gates around it. We don’t have the right kind of gates and I was unwilling to make the investment for a short season. Also, I figured someone would tip the gate or scale it anyways. Instead, we decorated the tree with shatter proof ornaments and deco mesh. It really looked beautiful despite being a “kid tree”. I also thought it would be a good opportunity to teach self-restraint and respect. After the tree was up, we taught the quads how to carefully touch ornaments with one finger. They were pretty good about it and usually followed the rule. While the tree was up, the quads took turns snatching ornaments when no one was looking. In those instances, we instructed them to put the ornaments back on the tree. Getting them to replace pulled ornaments proved a lesson in patience and acceptance for me. Though we used shatterproof ornaments, a few perished and some needed hot glue.  Aside from the tree, decorations in quad approved areas only included the mantle and nativity.  That was all I could handle.

Teaching the quads to respect the tree was a monumental task so presents were stored in the study.  We tucked gifts around the tree on Christmas Eve while visions of sugar plums danced in the quad’s heads. When Christmas arrived, our tree albeit rearranged many times over, was still intact and standing proudly.  Whew!

Although our tree wasn’t glistening with our favorite blown glass ornaments, I found a place in the dining room for a few heirlooms I wanted to enjoy.

Decorate a chandelier with garland and ornaments

To accommodate a family of 16 adults and 7 children, we moved the high chairs out of the kitchen, and dined with the quads in the play room. This left better dining accommodations for our guests.

Although our living room is small, we managed to cram the entire crew in for gift exchanges.  The panorama feature on my phone almost captured everyone.  I simply couldn’t move fast enough while being steady to get all 23 of us.

Keeping tabs on everyone during gift opening commanded my full attention so there’s only one photo from the charades:

watermarked Christmas 2014

We typically keep our Christmas tree and decorations up until New Year’s Day.  It’s so much work putting them out, we like to enjoy them for the full month.  This year, I had enough with teaching the quads respect of the Christmas tree and had everything packed up two days after Christmas.  In fact, the quads were so talented at ornament removal, they were charged with the task of taking ornaments down for the year.  They really enjoyed this “chore” above all others they’ve been given.
