Three Day Weekend

Thanks to the Labor Day holiday, I got to enjoy a three-day weekend with George. My favorite days are those when the six of us are all together. Life seems much simpler when George and I are cohesive team and I feel far more productive with him. In honor of our time together, George and I set our sights on trying something new with the babies each day.

1. Saturday

All summer we considered taking the babies to the Children’s Museum, but never had the moxie. When Saturday afternoon rolled around, we mustered the courage to go even with a high likelihood of a packed house. Despite the holiday weekend, the museum wasn’t terribly crowded and was easy for us to navigate with two twin strollers. We began in the infant/ toddler area where the babies could roam freely. There, we explored cause/ effect with a switch activated machine. Then, the babies crawled in a padded circle to view critters in a terrarium. Unfortunately, the inhabitants of these terrariums weren’t energetic enough to capture the babies’ attention. After a romp in the baby area, we whisked through the remaining exhibits. Although most of the museum was a bit above the babies’ comprehension level, they seemed content to stroll about in air conditioning while seeing novelties.

The babies enjoyed watching the pin wheels spin and pom poms float when they activated the switch. When we were done in this area, I washed their little hands thoroughly.

I managed to find shoes for everyone in storage. Now that the babies are mobile, they need footwear for public outings!

2. Sunday

In my opinion, Labor Day weekend is never complete without grilled food and a final dip in the pool. After all, it’s the official mark to summer’s end. We invited my parents and grandmother to help us honor this tried and true traditions. The babies were no strangers to the pool, but this was the first time in a kiddie pool. With the help of my parents, the babies experienced the joys of an over sized shallow pool. Unlike our other trips to the pool, Mason seemed happy swimming since he could stand up and control where he ventured. George was really pleased we made at least one trip to our community pool. Since we pay astronomical Home Owner’s Association fees, he feels better when we use the ammenities.

At first, the rain shower mushroom startled the babies, but soon enough it was fascinating.

George dressed Sydney and saw no need for a swim diaper. About 20 minutes into our swim time, I noticed her hiney ballooning out. Luvs are VERY water absorbent to say the least.

After we had all the fun in the sun we could handle, we headed back home. As soon as we arrived, I piled all four babies in the bathtub for a scrub down while George and Dad got busy with the grill. Four squeaky clean babies donning fresh pajamas devoured hamburger patties, shrimp, pasta, and veggies. I think swimming revved up their appetites. Also thanks to the swimming, the babies drifted off into slumber immediately following dinner. Swimming and sun have a way of zapping energy even from toddlers. This worked to our advantage because the adults enjoyed a peaceful dinner.

3. Monday

By the time Monday rolled around, George and I had no energy in the reserves for another outing. Instead, we decided to have a home adventure. We whipped up edible finger paint for a sensory/ art experience. Because the paint was a bit goopy, I knew it would destroy paper. Instead, we taped foil to the table as canvas for our masterpieces. This seemed like a brilliant idea. Before we doled out paint, the babies enthusiastically patted the paper watching the shimmery stuff create a metallic tinkle sound. About a nanosecond later, Harper pulled his off in strips and made a snack of it. The other babies temporarily kept their foil, but they soon figured out how to pull it off. That put a damper on our foil canvases, but everyone enjoyed playing in the paint anyways.

Sydney is not typically allowed to have a pacifer outside of her crib, but we let her during sensory play because it helps calm her with otherwise overstimulating sensory experiences.

A Four Horse Race

After the babies celebrated their first birthday, many people began asking if they were walking. Not quite yet. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t giving it the old college try. Each of them approaches mobility in their own way, practicing their skills daily. It’s a joy to watch their little triumphs.

Rylin is fantastic at balancing. From a seated position, she can rise to her feet, bend down and come back up again. We see her cruising from pieces of furniture and pushing toys often. Most of the time she lacks courage to take steps, but I think she’s capable.

This is Rylin’s favorite walker, but she also likes the shopping cart, activity table, and turtle.

I think Harper has been wanting to walk since he was about three months old, which is when he first started wanting to bear weight on his feet. He also balances really well and pushes toys all over the place, including non-push toys like tables. He hasn’t gotten the moxie to take steps either, but is so proud of himself when he walks holding one of our hands.

Sydney isn’t keen on standing without support, but she pulls up onto everything and cruises everywhere. Her favorite activity is circling the coffee table or galloping along the fireplace. She becomes territorial and protests when other babies invade her space while she’s doing either of these things.

Furniture gives Sydney a nice security blanket.

As of today, Mason is the only one brave enough to take unassisted steps. Much of the time he becomes over excited and bounces or leans forward, putting a halt to walking. He is also well versed with push toys, including pushing toys on his knees.

Wheeled toys are the best for pushing.

The Little Things Thursdays: Installment #30

I think I blinked and it was suddenly Thursday. That means it’s time once again to link up with Rebecca at A Beautiful Ruckus for the Little Things Thursdays. Each week we pause to reflect upon some of the little things that made the week special.

1. On Monday, we had a play date with two year old triplets (a quatriplet play date). I met their mom, Christina, indirectly through my mom a while back. Her aunt and mom work in the same office and chatter about high order multiples, comparing notes often. This was the first play date we’ve had with older kids so I wasn’t sure how it would go. Even though the triplets are a bit older, they seemed to enjoy our toddler toys, especially The Weebles Treehouse. They were also good with the babies. In addition to enjoying our toys, the triplets educated me on toddler proofing. They proved themselves capable of opening our baby gate and reaching our remote control basket. Oh the things to come!

It’s incredible how much taller two year olds are in comparison to our 13 month olds.

I was bummed to find out that at two, the triplets were too big for our quad table. I was hoping to hang onto that thing until the quads were close to three. At leas the triplets were okay eating picnic style.

2. The past several months have been trying for our community of parents of multiples. Several families have said goodbye to their babies far too soon, and the entire community felt the pangs of their grief. As a way to honor these precious babies, members of our group came together to collect funds. We then worked with an artist, Victoria Glen, to create memorial necklaces. She creates custom, hand stamped jewelry using a variety of metal materials and designed beautiful pieces for them. When we commissioned the second piece, she was so moved by the story, she donated her work to the family. What an act of kindness for a family she’s never seen or met!

I was so impressed with Victoria’s work, I ordered a piece for myself. Because her work is 100% custom, I was concerned it might not fit my quad mom budget. To my surprise, she’s very reasonable, and can work with a small budget. Victoria worked with me to determine exactly what I envisioned. She took time to listen to my description and sent pictures with examples of options so I could see various combinations. I chose a long necklace with the babies names stamped around a hammered heart. I requested two additional embellishments, one a crystal ruby (the babies’ birthstone) and the other a stamped circle with their birth date. I chose stainless steel because it’s strong and virtually quadruplet proof! I LOVE my necklace! 3. Over the past year, I’ve neglected my passion for reading. I unabashedly assumed there was no time for it a midst raising quadruplets. A few weeks ago, a friend with young children was telling me about a new book series she enjoys. The wheels started churning in my head and I wondered why I don’t have time to read. Naturally, I don’t have entire evenings or days to devour a book, but I can spare a few minutes a day for a novel. Sophie Kinsella is one of my favorite authors and I knew my sister had her most recent release so I borrowed it. Sophie writes light-hearted comical pieces that aren’t complex, which I find relaxing. I’ve since returned to my former bedtime routine of reading just one chapter before I nod off to sleep. It’s been so long since I read a Sophie book, I nearly forgot how much I adore them. She’s British so I tend to pick up a new British vocabulary. In the next few weeks I may talk about knickers, mention sniggers, or proclaim, “Bollocks!” If I really let it get to me, I may adopt a phony British accent. I’m enamored with accents as long as I can follow them. I should add, I found Sophie Kineslla’s books on CD first, when I had a long commute. It was then that I developed a love of the British accent. Whenever I read her books now in print, I hear the accents coming through.

4. Last night I found this biohazard bag neatly folded in our camera bag. I have a hazy memory of surgery prep before the babies’ delivery. I had to remove my earrings and my sister requested a bag for safe keeping. They have been safe for well over a year! The only problem is I had no idea where my earrings were and since purchased a new pair. I’m glad to have my old pair back again.

Over The Summer: {Staycation}

Believe it or not, the summer wasn’t ALL about the babies. Yes, it was mostly baby centered, but as a Father’s Day gift I arranged stay-cation for George and I. To my delight, Nisey, Grandpa, Terri, and Ed accepted the challenge to babysit overnight. Seriously, to leave four babies overnight, we needed four adults. On Father’s Day, George received a gift certificate for a date night including dinner and movie of his choice. Unbeknownst to him, we were also staying the night at the nearest Hilton, our first night away from the babies.

Since he had Cart Blanche, George chose the new Star Trek flick. I’ll be honest, I remember the television series, but have never seen it or any of the previous movies. Consequently, I had very low expectations for the movie. Fortunately, it was far better than I anticipated. Plus, I got the background on Star Trek, which means I now understand the references on the Big Bang Theory. Following the movie, we enjoyed George’s favorite cuisine, sushi, at Sushi Zushi. I am not a fan of fish or really seafood in general, but Sushi Zushi, has a wide array of vegetarian/ vegan options I enjoy.

Because going out without four babies is a rare occasion for us, George and I did a little shopping after dinner. I snagged a few deals at Gap, and then we could not resist going to Carter’s. The majority of the babies’ clothes are either hand me downs or gifts so I rarely shop for them. Before the babies were born, I took a stance that I did not want to dress them in identical outfits. Instead, I wanted to celebrate their uniqueness. I often dress them in similar colors or coordinated outfits because it looks cute in pictures, but that’s where I usually draw the line. Going into Carter’s was an “Ah ha” moment for me. Parents of multiples dress their children in identical clothing because it’s easy! Carter’s was overflowing with adorable, inexpensive clothes for girls and boys. My head literally started spinning. Choosing four outfits of similar color schemes that were not identical was nearly too much for my quad mom brain. I thought I might short circuit so grabbed a stack of options I liked and gave George final say on what we purchased. Here’s what ended up in our shopping bags-

Even though I despise driving, I volunteered to drive home following our date. George became irritated with my indirect route home through a parking lot, and was puzzled when I parked the car outside the Hilton. At first, he was slightly disappointed when he realized we were staying he didn’t kiss the babies goodnight, but quickly warmed up to the idea. Even though the babies sleep well at night, sleep is a precious commodity always in short supply for us. I think we both conked out close to 10 pm. We had no chores to do or babies that needed tending, and we took full advantage of that. Naturally, we woke up at 7:15 am, right on cue. However, we did not get up to change, feed, or entertain anyone. Rather, we lazily enjoyed the morning before packing up to greet the babies back home. It may have been one night only, and near home, but our stay-cation was refreshing and much needed. Thank you, Nisey, Grandpa, Terri, and Ed for taking care of the babies overnight.

The Little Things Thursdays: Installment #29

Thursday has rolled around once again. It’s time for us to link up with Rebecca at A Beautiful Ruckus for The Little Things Thursdays. Each Thursday, we take time to reflect upon some of the little things that brightened our week.

1. Laughter is good for the soul, and the babies gift us plenty of laughter to fill our days. Sydney’s hair is getting longer by the day so I’ve begun pulling it into a side swept ponytail. We could not contain the laughter a few days ago when her hair stood straight up after the ponytail holder was removed. She seemed to think it was entertaining as well.

2. Keeping up with family tradition, my grandmother (GiGi to the babies) hosted a family birthday party honoring the babies. GiGi whipped up a family meal chock full of the babies favorite dishes (macaroni and cheese, steamed carrots, roast, and rolls). For dessert, Cici made scrumptious funfetti cupcakes. Now experienced with cake smashing, the babies demolished these cupcakes.

They each received a brightly wrapped package containing a tiny backpack filled with books. Reading is a beloved pastime in our family so I hope to instill a love of books in the babies now. Of their new reads, they especially enjoy the book, “Thank you, God for Puppies” by Tommy Nelson. They literally squeal when they spy it.

Keeping up with tradition, each of the babies approached the cupcake in a unique way. Sydney entertained the entire family when she grabbed her cupcake and went after it like an apple. She did not let go until it was completely devoured. Mason ate none of the cupcake and only licked the frosting off the top.

3. We’ve been working on learning environmental sounds and Rylin is all about it. She produces a moo and ba sound upon request. She and Mason scrunch their noses and snort if you ask them what a pig says. However, my favorite sound of all is Rylin’s smacking to call the dogs. Apparently George and I smack our lips to call the dogs A LOT because Rylin’s been imitating this all week. She also makes the sound if she sees a picture of a dog. It’s precious.

4. Today, Granny, (my uncle Clarke’s mother) celebrated her 90th birthday, and she met the babies for the first time. Granny is 90, but she’s spry and didn’t miss a beat with the babies. She was determined to learn each baby’s name and got a snuggle with each of them. Happy birthday, Granny!

Even at 90, Granny helped Mason take steps. The picture quality is poor…I snapped it while wrangling another baby so the hand was not steady. Still, it is really sweet.

Poppy informed me that he celebrated his 92nd birthday last month and that he and Granny recently celebrated 71 years of marriage. What a wonderful example of commitment and honor.

Granny and Poppy’s son, Jack, was visiting from Washington in honor of the momentous occasion and brought them to the house.

Plagiosaur, No More

During my pregnancy, Mason spent most of his days nestled in my rib cage. I remember pleading with him to scoot down just a smidgen so I could feel a bit of relief. However, his siblings just didn’t leave him any space to move. In my ribs he remained. After delivery, I noticed a rib on my right side was shifted out of alignment, but Mason seemed fine. After discharge from the NICU, we noticed him struggling to keep his head upright. After an occupational therapy evaluation, we learned that his neck muscles were weak on the left side causing him to drop his head to the right. After months of occupational therapy, there was concern regarding not only his neck muscles but also his head shape. An evaluation at Cranial Technologies revealed severe Plagiocephaly, or oblique head shape.

We made the difficult decision to have him fitted for a DOC band to correct his head shape. Although treatment was estimated to last 2-3 months, Mason endured treatment for a grueling 5 months. In the beginning, he didn’t mind wearing the band 23 hours a day, and we thought he was adorable wearing it. His new accessory seemed to highlight his dreamy brown eyes and huge dimples. I also enjoyed having one on one time with him as I took him for adjustments on a weekly basis. We anticipated that he would complete treatment prior to the onset of a hot Texas summer, but he just wasn’t done by then. He ended up outgrowing the first DOC band and was evaluated a second time. Based upon evaluation results, Mason was fitted for a second DOC band.

Over the past several weeks, our entire family became increasingly tired of Mason’s DOC band. I grew tired of figuring out how to take him to appointments while caring for the other babies, George grew tired of decorating and touching up the paint, but worst of all Mason grew tired of wearing it. For the first time, he started unfastening the Velcro on the side and pulling at it. It pained me to force him to continue wearing it when clearly he was D-O-N-E. This past Friday he began crying when we put it on him as if really bothered by it. Upon removal of the band, we noticed two red spots forming. One was on the center of his forehead and the other on his left temple. Since Cranial Technologies is not open on weekends, Mason got a weekend long break from the DOC band and he seemed so happy. On Monday, I called the clinic so he could be adjusted that afternoon.

My friend, Kristin, happened to be hanging out with us on Monday so she helped me tote all four babies to Cranial Technologies for Mason’s appointment. It was the first time I brought all four babies together to the clinic, and the staff finally got to see the full set.

Mason’s occupational therapist at Cranial Technologies examined his head and was ecstatic with his progress. She reported that his ears and cheeks were now even, and the back of his skull rounded out. Amen! It was a slow day at the clinic so Cindy asked if I wanted Mason to have his exit images taken. What? EXIT? Hallelujah! Within a few short minutes, Mason was dressed down to his diaper, fitted with a stocking cap and his noggin was photographed with a 360 degree camera. We were then taken to a small room where Cindy showed us before treatment, mid treatment, and after pictures of Mason’s head from all angles. It was reaffirming to see how much progress he made. Before we left, Mason was given a DOC Band Graduation diploma and we thanked Cindy for helping him. While DOC band treatment was far longer than we anticipated, George and I will never regret what it did for Mason and I hope he realizes the benefits later in life.

I didn’t anticipate Mason’s graduation and I didn’t have my camera, but I snapped a few pictures using my phone to commemorate the big day.

This is Cindy who we have to thank for helping Mason along the way. Each week, she charted his growth and adjusted his band to encourage growth.

Mason seemed impressed with his own progress. The picture on the left is before treatment, the next is mid treatment, and the far right shows him now. In a few weeks, we will get his exit evaluation report and copies of all images.

Over the Summer {Field Trips}

As the babies became mobile and increasingly curious, they became cranky being confined to our home. Witching hour often became intense and trying. I quickly discovered the babies needed more opportunities to explore outside the home with “field trips”. With the help of family and friends, I was able to venture out to new places with the babies. I checked into visiting some local children’s museums and such, but found the babies were just has happy to go to less expensive venues including dining out, shopping, and swimming.

Dining Out

Before my summer break officially started, we went to Jason’s Deli as our first family meal in a restaurant. It gave me confidence knowing that dining out could be a pleasurable experience for all. Later, we ventured to the Rainforest Cafe with a few friends. I had not been there in over a decade and forgot how impressive it is. As our tour guide, aka the hostess, showed us to our table, a rain storm complete with lightning and thunder ensued as gorillas aggressively shook nearby trees. Since loud, surprising sounds startle the babies, the thunderstorm did not bode well. Rylin began to scowl and I became concerned about this adventure. However, when the storm ceased, the babies settled into their high chairs and soaked the scenery all in. The babies scarfed a kid’s meal grilled cheese with a banana on the side as if were the best food they ever sampled.

With the mild temperatures, George noted it was ideal for patio dining at Joe T. Garcia’s, a local Tex Mex hot spot. Impulsively, I extended an invitation to my sister and her boyfriend and they accepted. Thankfully, they also agreed to a ridiculously early dinner to accommodate the babies and to beat the dinner rush (the line winds around the building and can go for hours). As George predicted, the weather was perfect and the eight of us enjoyed dining al fresco. We confirmed that the babies are Texans as they chowed down on cheese enchiladas, refried beans, rice, fajita meat, and guacamole.

Shopping

Since the babies are yet not at the age of ~~demmanding~~ politely requesting toys in stores, taking them shopping makes for a worthwhile adventure. Mom and I took the babies to Target where we used birthday gift cards to buy toddler toys and other baby necessities. I found that veggie sticks are the perfect distraction for antsy babies. I dished those things out right and left. However, I think we may have left a trail along the aisles of Target.

When we go to Target, Walmart, or Kroger, I scout out a cart that seats more than one baby. I learned the hard way that Rylin needs the seat with a harness because she attempts Houdini escapes when in the cart.

Before we got busy shopping, I filled the babies’ sippy cups with water from the concession stand.

I was ecstatic when I learned a Sprouts market opened near our house. Prior to the babies arrival, we traveled to the next town for Sprout’s produce and meat. With the babies, there just is no time to travel longer than necessary for shopping. Therefore, we had not been to Spouts in well over a year. With the help of Grandaddy and Aunt Carol, we went on Wednesday, which is double ad day. I scored wonderful produce on sale, including blueberries for $.99!

With the help of Jen, we visited our local pet store. I didn’t expect much out of it since they don’t sell puppies and kittens the way they did in the past. However, our pet store has a dog day care, which was highly entertaining for babies. The dogs romped and wrestled behind a large pane of glass. For about 20 minutes eight little eyes were fascinated by the canine antics, especially when some of the smaller dogs ran up a toddler slide. Aside from the dogs, we also enjoyed looking at birds and playing with dog toys. As it turns out, dog toys are more fun than baby toys. They bold colored, crinkly, squeaky, and sometimes flashy.

When we returned to the house, the babies found Lily and Sasha’s toys far more interesting than ever before. This Loofah dog was snatched by little hands numerous times.

Swimming

Over the course of the summer, we made several trips to the pool. Each time, we realized how different each baby behaves in water. Mason is not a fan unless he is held or in shallow water where he can bounce and wade. On the other hand, Harper and Sydney could take up residence in water. The two of them kick and splash with zeal. Harper nearly dog paddled without prompting. I only wish we could do swim lessons for them, but sadly Mommy & Me swim lessons don’t work with one mommy and four babies. Rylin has her moments of enjoying the water and overall tolerates it.

Getting a group picture with the quads is always a challenge. By the end of our swimming excursion, Rylin had ENOUGH already.

Our Super Seats are perfect for traveling during meal times. I’m not sure who fed Sydney, but it looks like they missed her mouth.

Following a dip in the pool, we use small inflatable pool for outdoor bath time. As soon as we arrive at the pool, we inflate it and fill it with water so it’s lukewarm once we finish swimming. That way, we come home with four clean babies dressed for bed.

When we go swimming, I always bring a Pack 'n' Play as a "holding cell" to use while we get things set up and put away. Some babies are more content with the situation than others...

Each time we traveled with the babies, my confidence in the goodness of people was restored. Where ever we went, the babies were welcomed and greeted with kind words such as, “amazing”, “what a blessing”, and “adorable”. Going out with multiples can be intimidating, but when people are kind, it makes the experience wonderful for everyone.

What Muffin Top? {The Melody Tank Dress}

A hot topic among quad moms (and probably most moms for that matter), is the post-pregnancy wardrobe. In fact, every few weeks or so, a new mom posts something about wardrobe woes. Regardless of how much weight is shed or exercises completed, I doubt that anyone’s body is ever exactly as it was before pregnancy.

Several weeks back, my quad mama friend, Rebecca, excitedly reported that she finally lost the last bit of pregnancy weight. That was a proud moment! However, she was dismayed after ordering a dress online that didn’t reveal her hard work. She posted a picture of herself in the new dress and sought feedback. The group was split in their opinions of the dress. Some said she should proudly show her “post pregnancy body”, while others candidly reported the dress was not “The One”. Based on the photograph alone, it seemed apparent to me that she did not feel beautiful in this dress even though she is beautiful. After all, she was back to her pre-pregnancy weight. The problem was not her body at all, it was the dress.

I’m not a fashion expert by any means. However, over the past year, I’ve worked at embracing a new style of clothing that flatters my body. I realize that I’m extremely petite and the majority of people around me do not see that I have anything to conceal. The fact is, I do. Despite my efforts with rehabilitation exercises and losing all pregnancy weight, excess skin, a distended naval, and a “muffin top” remain in my mid section. Again, I know that most people do not believe this problem area exists, but I know it does, and the wrong clothes make me feel self-conscious. I considered baring it all to prove the grim details, but opted not to. If I revealed what makes me feel self-conscious and uncomfortable, then what’s the point in expertly masking it with the right clothes? Instead of showing the parts of myself that I don’t like, I’m sharing how I make clothing choices.

When I saw Rebecca’s frustrations, I shared a few pointers, and to my delight she headed my advice. Finally she found a Little Black Dress that flatters from an online clothing company, Fresh Produce. This company offers beach-inspired clothing with flowing, forgiving lines and an array of colors and sizes. This is perfect for a post pregnancy body and busy moms, I think. Rebecca’s photographs in the LBD exude confidence and beauty.

Here’s what I told Rebecca-

In the past, I often wore fitted clothing, which now only highlights that nice “muffin top”. I’ve been replacing my old clothing with loser fitting, flowing tops and pairing them with a slim leg line. When I do this, I mask the stomach area while highlighting the slimmer parts of my body. Before pregnancy and during pregnancy, dresses were a wardrobe staple for me. Even now, I’ve found a way to keep them in my clothing rotation. I now choose dresses with an Empire waistline and gather just above my stomach region, skimming over my stomach instead of clinging to it. I also like A line dresses that are narrow above the stomach and flair out, drawing attention to the thinnest parts of my body and camouflaging problem areas. Gathering or pleating around the neckline or waist helps fabric keep from bunching around the “muffin top”. I also consider material and find that 100% cotton and cotton/ polyester blends are more forgiving than lycra and spandex, which cling (unless you are talking about shape wear).

After dishing out all these tips to Rebecca, I wondered how I would fare finding a dress from Fresh Produce, following my own advice. I was ecstatic when Fresh Produce extended an opportunity to test drive one of their pieces. Considering what I suggested for Rebecca, I chose the Melody tank dress in eggplant. I chose the eggplant color because I find deep colors flattering for my skin tone and wanted to veer away from the cliche black. It’s a simple tank dress made of 100% cotton with an Empire gathered waist and scoop neck. I also appreciated that it is machine washable and dryer safe. Having quadruplets in the house means paying attention to washing directions is impossible!

When my dress arrived, I immediately put it through the washer and dryer test. I was slightly concerned about bleeding considering the dress was a deep jewel tone. However, it did not run onto the rest of our load at all and came out looking as it did before. As an added bonus, it’s run in the dryer kept me from needing to iron or steam it. Goodness knows I don’t have time for that!

As a mom on the go, I found the Melody tank dress ideal for moments when I wanted to look cute, yet be comfortable while caring for four toddlers. I first wore the dress to the babies’ one year well check up. Since we are usually confined to the house, I consider any outing worth getting dressed up, and that includes appointments. At the same time, I am taking care of four babies so I need practical, comfortable clothing. A hidden feature I love is the pockets. When I’m out with the babies, it seems I always need a place to stash a tissue or lip gloss. I wore the dress a second time for one of our afternoon field trips to the pet store. Even though I was wearing a dress, I wasn’t concerned about loading or unloading babies from the van (in sweltering Texas heat), or toting babies around because it was absolutely comfortable and modest enough. To date, I’ve only had chances to wear my new dress while out with the babies, but it’s dressy enough for a future date night, especially when paired with fun accessories.

I’m sure the pediatrician’s office did not care about my outfit, but when out, I like to feel cute, and the Melody tank dress delivered.

I paired the dress with a long soft gold necklace and sandals, but I can also pair it with other neutrals such as silver, copper, and black. I also want to try it with a bright cardigan (I’m thinking of a turquoise or poppy) so that I can wear it to work as well.

George snapped this picture for me AFTER I toted for babies around all day, fed them dinner, bathed them, and tucked them into bed. Despite all that, I thought the dress was still comfortable and maintained shape.

Prior to the arrival of the quadruplets, I enjoyed comparison shopping, and of course trying on clothing and touching them to assess quality. In recent days, my time for shopping is slim and I am learning the art of online shopping. I was admittedly hesitant to try online clothing shopping, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality, style, and fit from Fresh Produce. The Little Things Thursdays: Installment #28

Whoa, Nelly! Is it Thursday??? Sometimes I don’t know where the minutes and hours go. Before I know it, a week or more vanished right before my eyes. Since it IS Thursday, it’s time to link up with Rebecca at A Beautiful Ruckus to recall what little things brought happiness to our week.

1. Texas summers are typically stricken with heat waves and severe drought conditions. This year we’ve seen more pleasant showers than I can ever recall. We still have plenty of triple digit days, but the rain is always refreshing.

2. Last night was our first bottle free night. In place of bottles we offered the babies Sippy cups of cow’s milk. Thankfully, they seemed content with this new bedtime routine and drifted off to a peaceful slumber without protest, and they stayed asleep all night long.

One new challenge with Sippy cups at the table, is the trill of playing with gravity. Without fail, the babies take a swig of milk then toss the cup over their shoulder. If the cup remains on the edge of the table, they push it until they hear that nice “crash” to the tile. I’ve been working really hard to redirect this behavior, but I sometimes miss opportunities. Yesterday I made my first ever trip to Buy Buy Baby and stumbled across Sippy cup straps. Ingenious. The babies still attempt to taunt gravity, but the cups don’t make it to the ground, which is hopefully not thrilling and cup tossing will soon cease.

Rylin nudged her cup over the edge, but it dangled instead of smacking the tile. That’s no fun.

3. Periodically, I rotate the babies toys, keeping some in rotation while others are stashed away. This week the Weeble’s tree house and camper returned from a sabbatical. The babies were thrilled to reacquaint with their old friends. The best part was the babies now discover how to play with the toys. These Weebles have been sent down the slide and for a camper ride numerous times this week.
